I feel your pain on the lifter failure you had. Since 99' when our 540 was new we have had 2 of them fail. The first one was during a run, it broke off at the trunion of the roller lifter and went down between the crank and #1 main cap. Luckily due to the block and caps we have it was not hurt, but the cam was chewed up. The second one happened 3 years ago. We were at a divisional event and I fired the car to warm it up and heard something hammering. Yep, this time the lifter had collapsed and threw needle bearings everywhere. Now keep in mind we used comp and lunati roller lifters, and I always kept adjustments in check. Finally went to the severe duty crower's and have had no trouble since. Another word of advice, if your big block has oil restrictors take them out! All they are doing is restricting oil flow to the cam and valvetrain. This was something else that was causing problems with our valve springs.
