*Bob and Billy Glidden*
In 2004 I attended the World Ford Challenge in St. Louis. Drag Racing legend Bob Glidden decided to race a class in this all-Ford monster-event, and even better he was going to do it in his son's old Mustang. His son, Billy Glidden, was one of the top Pro-5.0 Drag Racers in the modern All-Ford drag racing era.
Between rounds I was able to meet Bob Glidden, get a picture with him, and even got a few autographs, mainly because everybody was swarming the younger racers(like his son) and either didn't care enough to talk to him or just didn't know who he was (most was the later). Later I tried to get an autograph from Billy, but they were either always busy working on the car or there was a long line of people wanting the same thing by his trailer.
Fast forward to a WFC 2005. No Billy Glidden to be found in the Pro-5.0 class, or any other class for that matter. I was pretty disappointed, as I was a big fan of Billy's sleek maroon, nitrous assisted, rocket of a Mustang. I later learned that the nitrous vs. blower era was ending, there was something a little newer to the Mustang drag racing world and it was taking over.
I ran into Billy at the annual All Ford Day at the Bandimere Speedway in Denver, CO later on in 2005. I sat in a golf cart with him for a few minutes between rounds, I finally got the chance to get his autograph and chat with him for a few minutes. As I was getting out of the cart I shook his hand again and told him how we all missed him at WFC that year. He shook his head and replied, "I'm a glutton for punishment...but not that bad!".
The turbo cars were taking over.
BTW guys, I'm Dave from Southern Ford Racing, LLC. I found this site by simply doing a google search for drag racing forums. Cool forum and I look forward to spending some time on this board.
